Northern Thailand is a treasure trove filled with glittering temples, ancient ruins, exotic markets and sumptuous foods. Come explore the capital of the Siam's golden age at Sukhothai, ride an elephant through the rainforest of Lampang, browse the markets of Chiang Mai, stay at a special homestay with local friends and enjoy a traditional khan toke dinner - there's so much to discover in the north of this kingdom.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Bangkok Make the most of this bewitching city of skyscrapers and temples, chaos and calm. Sitting on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is a fusions of country and city influences. If you arrive early, check out the dazzling Grand Palace and the majestic Emerald Buddha.
Day 2 Sukhothai Cycling is the best way to see Sukhothai's ancient ruins, set amid beautiful lakes and gardens. Stroll around fertile rice paddies and soak up the tranquility. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener - choices for dinner here range from fried rice to fried bugs.
Day 3 Lampang Take a step back in time and tour Lampang's fascinating temples by bicycle, stopping off at a local making and enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. See the impressive murals of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang or enjoy some pampering at the local herbal sauna and massage centre.
Day 4 Village Homestay Jump aboard an elephant for an unforgettable forest ride and watch young and old elephants enjoy a scrub down at their communal bathing session. Spend the evening in the home of our village friends and witness Thai rural life first-hand. Be treated to a traditional khan tohk dinner, live music and dance performance. In the morning, offer alms to the monks or stretch out with a yoga session.
Days 5-7 Chiang Mai Situated at the crossroads of one of South-East Asia's most important trade routes, Thailand's northern capital is a legendary centre of ancient culture, heart-pounding adventure, relaxation and shopping. Rent a bike to tour the many temples, enjoy a cooking class, cruise down the river on a bamboo raft or hone haggling skills at the many markets. Later, why not head down to the riverside for a couple of drinks?
Day 8 Bangkok Make sure you leave time to stock up on souvenirs before saying goodbye.
Local Payment
A local payment amount of Thai Baht ฿4250 will be collected by your leader on day 1 of your trip. Most of our trips require a compulsory local payment. The local payment is required to be made to your leader on the first day of your trip, in cash in the specified currency. The local payment will be disbursed for your benefit in acquiring in-country services. Paying locally facilitates the flow of funds to local suppliers in countries that we travel through and therefore helps to reduce the overall cost of your trip.
Meals
While travelling with us you will experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Generally, to give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There is no obligation to do this though. Your group leader will be able to suggest favourite restaurants during your trip. Please check the 'meal inclusions' section below for details of meals included.
