This 6-day package will take you along one of the great overland trails of Indochina. Visit the mysterious Plain of Jars and stay in Sam Neua, one of the most remote provinces of Laos. Visit the caves where, during the Vietnam War, Lao revolutionaries stayed in cave shelters. Cross the border into Vietnam, and drive through the scenic Phu Luong Nature Reserve to Mai Chau. In this scenic valley, you will stay for two nights in a home stay. The trip ends with a transfer to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

Important: Participants need to be in possession of a valid visa for Vietnam for this tour. Visa Upon Arrival is not available.

Day 1 Mon/ Thu

This morning you will be transfered to the bus station in Luang Prabang to begin the full day scenic bus journey through to Phonsawan. Upon arrival in Phonsawan transfer to your hotel by taxi (approximately US$8).

Day 2 Tue / Fri

After breakfast you have a free day to explore the Plain of Jars. If you want to get an extensive experience taking in triabla villages, natural beauty and the remote sites of the mysterious Jars, you can choose to pre-book an optional excursion. Day 3 Wed / Sat

After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the bus staion. The public bus will take most of the day for the drive to Samneua, the capital of Houaphan province. This journey will take you through some of the most remote and scenic areas of Southeast Asia. You will pass through Muang Kham, the capital of Xieng Khouang Province, located in a fertile valley. The landscape is spectular and you will pass many villages. Late in the afternoon you'll arrive in Sam Neua and transfer to hotel (approximately US$4 by taxi).

Day 4 Thu / Sun

Today at 07:00 AM you will be transfered to Viengxai. Here you will visit the cave of Kaysone Phomvihane, one of the Pathet Lao leaders who later became the first prime minister of Lao PDR. During the war the Pathet Lao leaders had their headquarters in these caves. Then you will continue to the border at Na Meo, where you will arrive before noon.

At this border-crossing there is no visa upon arrival service so you need to have a valid visa for Vietnam. A ClubBackpacker representative will be waiting for you in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam which is one of the least visited and most unexplored provinces in the country. You will get the opportunity to stop at several Muong villages along the way.

After a picnic lunch we will drive along the Ma river to Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The Pu Luong limestone landscape is an area of outstanding beauty, cultural interest and high biodiversity stretching from Mai Chau to Cuc Phuong National Park.

Today is a free day. Why not rent a bicycle and explore the beautiful valley of Mai Chau with its verdant rice fields or if you are feeling a little more adventurous try hiking past White Thai villages.

After breakfast, your ClubBackpacker representative will transfer you to Hanoi by car which is a 3-4 hour journey.
